IT suits me?

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

For some reason when it comes to IT subjects I always forget the details. I know I studied all those obligatory bits and bites stories during the last couple of years but they are not really of any interest to me. Reason is because I value more the result of what IT delivers to support to the end users. I discovered that I am more focused on the what and why do we need IT and less in how are we actually going to implement it.
A couple of months ago a person asked me whether I had any commercial sense because of my IT background. It is such a prejudice to think that people who work in IT are all nerds. All I could answer was all about the truth: yes, I always think in terms of the user, not in terms of IT. I like to see thinks from multiple perspectives. As a result I have recently made a switch to a position in the business. No more IT design activities for me except for being the end user and calling the IT-helpdesk when troubles may occur on my PC :)
What stays is the fact that every time I will attend some kind of non IT meeting it will feel like I am one of the experts in the room. I have more knowledge than I realize. Last week a presentation was held to a group of business colleagues and contained terms like servers, cloud computing and RFID, typically IT subjects and non-business subject. When the guy presenting asked to what extend those terms were known, hardly anyone raised their hands.
Again I also could not tell any details except for the conceptual idea behind them. Does it really matter? I will have to accept that I will never be a specialist, I am more like a born generalist. And I am satisfied with that!
